Yosef’s Attitude and the Power of Positivity

Parashat Miketz offers profound insights into the transformative power of attitude, particularly through the story of Yosef. At the beginning of the parashah, Yosef languished in an Egyptian prison for two years, falsely accused and forgotten by the chief cupbearer he had helped. Despite these hardships, Yosef remains steadfast in his faith and maintains a positive attitude, ready to rise to the occasion when Pharaoh summons him to interpret his dreams. This remarkable evolution is not merely a matter of divine providence but also a testament to Yosef’s attitude. His story offers wise lessons on how perspective and mindset can shape our lives.

The Power of Perspective

When Yosef is brought before Pharaoh, his first words are not about himself but about HaShem: "It is not by my own power; G-d will answer Pharaoh's welfare" (Bereishit 41:16). Yosef demonstrates humility and a mindset rooted in trust and gratitude, even after years of suffering. He refuses to view his trials as purposeless and instead sees himself as an instrument of divine will. This perspective allows him to approach challenges constructively, turning his own misfortunes into opportunities to help others.

Choosing Optimism in Adversity

Yosef's ability to maintain a constructive attitude is evident in how he interprets Pharaoh's dreams. At the beginning of the parashah, Pharaoh has two perplexing dreams that none of his advisors can interpret. Yosef is summoned from prison and confidently interprets the dreams as a prophecy of seven years of abundance followed by seven years of famine. He goes beyond interpretation, offering strategic advice on how to manage the impending crisis. Instead of focusing on the impending years of famine, Yosef emphasizes the solution: preparation during the years of plenty. This approach reflects a mindset of action and hope rather than despair. Yosef teaches us that even in the face of potential catastrophe, focusing on proactive solutions can transform outcomes. 

Attitude Shapes Leadership

Throughout his life, Yosef faced extraordinary challenges: betrayal by his brothers, slavery, and imprisonment. Yet, at every turn, Yosef maintained a positive and proactive attitude. Rather than becoming bitter or despondent, he remained resilient, using his abilities to benefit others. In prison, he interpreted the dreams of the chief butler and baker, which ultimately led to his introduction to Pharaoh. Yosef's attitude doesn't only redeem him personally; it elevates him to a position of leadership. Pharaoh recognizes Yosef's wisdom and appoints him viceroy of Egypt, saying, "Can we find another like him, a man in whom is the spirit of G-d?" (Bereishit 41:38). Yosef's faith, humility, and focus on the greater good inspire trust and admiration, underscoring how a positive attitude can influence not only personal success but also the lives of many others.

Lessons for Our Lives

From Yosef's journey, we learn that while we cannot control our circumstances, we can control how we respond to them. Charles Swindoll writes "...I am convinced that life is 10% what happens to me, and 90% how I react to it. And so it is with you.. we are in charge of our attitudes." Maintaining faith, humility, and a focus on constructive action enables us to turn challenges into opportunities. Yosef's story encourages us to adopt an attitude of resilience and optimism, trusting that even in difficult times, there is a greater purpose unfolding. His attitude exemplifies a balance of personal initiative and trust in divine providence.
