Welcoming the Journey of New Beginnings

Rabbi Gamliel Respes

"Their unwavering dedication teaches us that new beginnings often require patience, persistence, and a deep belief in the potential that lies within us"

In this week's parashah of Lech Lecha, we embark on a profound journey with our patriarch Avraham and matriarch Sarah. Their story teaches us valuable lessons about embracing new beginnings and stepping into the unknown. Lech Lecha, meaning “go forth” or “go to yourself”, is a command given by HaShem to Avraham. It signifies a call to leave his homeland, his father's house, and all that is familiar to him. It is an invitation to venture into the uncharted territory of a new beginning, both physically and spiritually.

This journey represents a recreation of Avraham’s identity. Through this call, Avraham becomes the father of a new nation and the progenitor of monotheism. His identity is recreated as he assumes the role of the patriarch of a people destined for a unique relationship with HaShem.

Avraham and Sarah answered this call with unwavering faith paving the way for a new nation and a profound relationship with HaShem. Their journey serves as a blueprint for us to navigate the challenges and opportunities of our lives

Avraham and Sarah's journey began with a leap of faith. They left behind the comfort and security of their known world and trusted that Hashem would guide them to a promised land. Their unwavering trust demonstrates the importance of having faith in the divine plan, even when it seems uncertain or frightening. It is a reminder that new beginnings often require us to step outside of our comfort zones and trust in the unfolding of a greater purpose.

In parashah Lech Lecha, Avraham is given a new purpose in life-to be a blessing to all nations. HaShem tells him that through his descendants, all the families of the earth will be blessed. This recreation of purpose involves Avraham embracing a larger mission beyond his personal aspirations. It requires him to become a vessel for HaShem’s plan and actively participate in bringing about a transformation in the world. Avraham’s purpose is recreated as he takes on the responsibility of establishing a righteous and just society, guided by the principles of monotheism.

He and Sarah were promised descendants as numerous as the stars in the sky, but they faced the challenge of infertility. Despite their old age, they remained committed to nurturing the seed of possibility. They exemplified the importance of perseverance and resilience in the face of obstacles. Their unwavering dedication teaches us that new beginnings often require patience, persistence, and a deep belief in the potential that lies within us.

Avraham and Sarah's journey wasn't just about their personal transformation it was about sharing their understanding of HaShem, showing hospitality, and kindness to strangers, and to all who cross their path. They understood that new beginnings thrive in an environment of community and their example reminds us to cultivate communities where people feel welcomed, valued, and respected.

Avraham and Sarah's journey was marked by a partnership. They support one another throughout their trials and tribulations, each contributing their unique strengths and abilities. Their story teaches us the power of collaboration and shared responsibility. It reminds us that new beginnings are often born through the synergy of diverse perspectives and talents.

Like Avraham and Sarah, we are invited to embark on new beginnings and journeys of self-discovery. They have shown us to trust in the divine plan, to nurture the seeds of possibility, to cultivate righteous and just communities, and to engage in partnerships that bring forth new life and blessings.

May we have the courage to heed the call to Lech Lecha, embracing the unknown with faith and resilience. May we find inspiration in the legacy of Avraham and Sarah, and may their story continue to guide us as we navigate the new beginnings in our lives.
