"It is a timeless concept that applies to us today"

Parashat Massei, found in the book of Numbers (Bamidbar), marks the end of the Israelites' 40-year journey in the wilderness. It recounts the various encampments and journeys of the Israelites as they traveled from Egypt toward the Promised Land. While there are many important lessons we can glean from this portion, one significant theme is the closeness of Hashem to His people.

Throughout their journey, the Israelites faced numerous challenges and hardships. They encountered enemies, endured physical and emotional struggles, and wrestled with their faith. Yet during it all, HaShem remained intimately involved with them. In Numbers (Bamidbar) 33: 2,3 Moshe recorded their stops along the way at HaShem’s command. These were their stops along the way: They left Ra'mese on the 15th of the first month, on the day after the Pesach offering the Israelites left triumphantly before the eyes of the Egyptians. The Israelites cried out to HaShem in distress, and He saved them.

These verses encapsulate the essence of the Israelites’ relationship with Hashem. Even when they face difficulties, they cried out to HaShem and He responded to their pleas for help. Hashem's closeness is further demonstrated through the many miracles and provisions He bestowed upon them during their wanderings. He guided them with a pillar of cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night, provided manna from heaven for sustenance and protected them from their enemies.

The idea of HaShem's closeness is not limited to the Israelites’ journey in the wilderness. It is a timeless concept that applies to us today. We too, face challenges, uncertainties, and moments of doubt. However, just as Hashem drew near to the Israelites, He continues to draw near to us.

In Jewish tradition. the notion of Hashem's closeness is often associated with the concept of "immanence". Immanence refers to the belief that God is intimately present within creation, involved in every aspect of our lives. This belief reminds us that we are never alone, even in our darkest moments. Hashem is always there, ready to listen, guide, and support us?

However, it is important to note that our perception of Hashem's closeness may fluctuate. At times we may feel a strong sense of connection and closeness to Hashem, while at other times, we may struggle to perceive His presence. Our own spiritual state, circumstances, and personal challenges can influence our perception. Nevertheless, the truth remains that HaShem's closeness is constant, regardless of our awareness, or feelings.

Parashot Massei encourages us to reflect on the closeness of HaShem throughout our own journeys. It reminds us to turn to Hashem in times of distress, to trust in His guidance, and to have faith that He is with us every step of the way. By cultivating an awareness of HaShem's immanence, we can find comfort, strength, and purpose in our lives, knowing that we are not alone in our wanderings.
