"Instead of dwelling on what's wrong, we can focus on the good things in our lives,"

We have heard of the benefits of having a positive mental attitude, such as less stress, lower blood pressure, and overall good health. At first glance, you may not recognize the valuable lessons on maintaining a positive mental attitude that are found in the Parashat of Re’eh. However, there are some key points from this portion that can help cultivate a positive mindset:
CHOOSE TO SEE BLESSINGS: In Devarim ( Deuteronomy) 11:26-28, Moshe presents a choice to the Israelites: blessing or curse, depending on their actions. This teaches us that we have the power to choose how we perceive and interpret events in our lives. We realize that our attitudes and actions have a direct impact on the outcomes we experience. By focusing on the positive aspects and counting our blessings, we can maintain a positive attitude even in challenging circumstances.
GRATITUDE AND GENEROSITY: Parashat Re’eh emphasizes the importance of gratitude and giving. In Devarim (Deuteronomy) 15:7-11, this section discusses the obligation to help those in need. When we express gratitude for what we have and share our blessings with others, we not only make a positive impact on their lives but also enhance our own sense of fulfillment and happiness. Gratitude and generosity shift our focus from scarcity to abundance, fostering a confident viewpoint and a sense of interconnectedness with others. Believing that there is a greater purpose and that things will work out for the best can help us maintain a positive attitude even when faced with adversity.
TRUST IN HASHEM: We are reminded in this parashah to trust in HaShem’s guidance and provisions. In Devarim (Deuteronomy) 12:28, Moshe encourages the Israelites to obey HaShem’s commandments and promises that doing so will lead to success. Similarly, trusting in a higher power and having faith in the divine plan can bring comfort, resilience, and assurance during challenging times. Believing that there is a greater purpose and that things will work out for the best can help us sustain a positive mental attitude even when faced with adversity.
GUARD AGAINST NEGATIVE INFLUENCES: In chapter 13 of Devarim, verses 1-5, Moshe cautions the Israelites to stay faithful to HaShem and not be swayed by deceptive teachings. Likewise, we should be mindful of the influences on our thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Surrounding ourselves with positivism, including supportive people and uplifting content can help us preserve a mental attitude that is positive. We must become aware of negative influences and actively choose to distance ourselves from them; in this way, we can protect our mental and emotional well-being.
SEEK JOY IN RELIGIOUS OBSERVANCE: Furthermore, this parashah highlights the importance of finding joy in religious observance. There is a discussion of the festivals of Pesach, Shavuot, and Succot in this portion. It emphasizes the need to rejoice during these sacred times. By finding delight and fulfillment in our spiritual practices and connecting with something greater than ourselves, we can maintain a positive mental attitude.
This passage reminds us that we have control over our attitudes, actions, and decisions and that choosing positive thoughts, attitudes, and behaviors can lead to a more satisfying and joyful life. By consciously choosing positivity, optimism, and kindness, we create an undeniable ripple effect that not only benefits us but also influences those around us.
In summary, Parashat Re’eh offers lessons on cultivating a positive attitude by choosing to see blessings, practicing gratitude and generosity, trusting in a higher power, making positive choices, guarding against negative influences, and finding joy in religious observance. Applying these principles can help us develop and maintain a positive mindset in our daily lives.
